New Delhi:
India has taken a big leap forward in its defence capability, as the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) successfully conducted the maiden flight tests of the Integrated Air Defence Weapon System (IADWS). Defence Minister Rajnath Singh made an announcement on Sunday and praised the system for strengthening national security.
“The Integrated Air Defence Weapon System (IADWS) is a multi-layered air defence system comprising all indigenous Quick Reaction Surface-to-Air Missile (QRSAM), Advanced Very Short Range Air Defence System (VSHORADS) missiles, and a high-power laser-based *Directed Energy Weapon (DEW).
He congratulated DRDO, the Armed Forces, and India’s defence industry, adding that the successful test had “established the multi-layered air defence capability of our country and will strengthen protection of vital assets against enemy aerial threats.”
Features of the Integrated Air Defence Weapon System (IADWS)
- Designed to counter a wide spectrum of aerial threats.
- Equipped with radar, launchers, guidance systems, missiles, and command-and-control units.
- Provides comprehensive and layered air defence for strategic locations.
- Fully indigenous system, eliminating dependency on imported technologies.
- Integrates QRSAM, VSHORADS, and DEW for maximum protection.
India’s Recent Defence Advancements
The recent IADWS test follows hot on the heels of another significant milestone, as India successfully test-fired the nuclear-capable Agni-5 ballistic missile from the Integrated Test Range (ITR) at Chandipur, Odisha, on August 20.
The Ministry of Defence said the Agni-5 missile achieved all operational and technical parameters. While it has largely been reported as having an effective strike range of 5,000 km, officials have indicated an upgradable version will have a strike range of up to 7,500 km in development
Strengthening National Security
By successfully conducting these tests in quick succession, India has yet again demonstrated its capacity to indigenously develop advanced military capability. The Integrated Air Defence Weapon System (IADWS) significantly enhances our capabilities for area defence against modern air threats; the Agni-5 missile re-establishes India’s capability for long-range strike.
Put together, these accomplishments demonstrate India’s growing self-reliance in defence technology and its commitment to defending national security.
